Collection of 83 paintings and 24 drawings by artist and teacher David Lax. Lax was chair of the art department at Dutchess Community College. David Lax paintings and drawings consists of 107 pieces. 83 are paintings, mainly oil, and 24 are ink or pastel drawings. Several of his works can be seen in the Davis Room in the Student Alumni Union on the RIT campus.

David Lax (1910-1990) donated over 100 of his paintings and drawings to RIT's collection in 1983. Lax, a native of New York's Hudson Valley, established and served as the chair of the art department at Dutchess Community College. During World War II, he worked for the U.S. Army as an illustrator. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
